Depoe Bay

Depoe Bay

One of the great treasures of the Oregon Coast, Depoe Bay is landlocked except for the harbor entrance though the rocks. This Bay is home to the smallest natural navigable harbors in the world consisting of 6 square acres. Locally known as “shooting the hole”, vessels make there way under Highway 101 through narrow channels. Depending on the time of year and the tidal conditions, onlookers have fun watching and sometimes getting wet from the Spouting Horn. Waves run beneath lava beds and build up pressure, spouting sea water as high as 60 feet in the air. Depoe Bay is also known for being the “Whale Watching Capital of the Oregon Coast”. Home to a resident pod of grey whales from March through December, visitors flock from everywhere to get the best whale watching around.
